About this artwork

This portrait was painted to celebrate the sixtieth birthday of Jean Redpath. Born in Edinburgh and raised in Fife, Redpath is internationally known as a singer of traditional Scottish ballads. She is the world's pre-eminent interpreter of the songs of Robert Burns. Fraser has shown the singer as if dressed for a performance, with a glimpse of a typical fishing village of the East Neuk of Fife to the right. This portrait was commissioned by the Glenrothes and District Burns Club and was destined from the start for the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
