About this artwork

The sitter was a Genoese general in the service of the Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella of Spain. Van Dyck must have painted him shortly after he himself had returned from Italy in 1627 and before Spinola left for Madrid on 3 January 1628, never to return to the Netherlands. Several versions similar to this picture exist, but a related preparatory drawing and the free handling of paint suggest that this is by Van Dyck rather than a studio work.
