About this artwork

The view is of the village of Herblay situated on the right bank of the River Seine, seen from across the bend in the river. The village lies to the north-west of Paris, and its distinctive church St. Martin d'Herblay can be seen at the top of the hill on the right. Towards the left of the broad sweep of the river, the smoke from a steamer is visible. Scenes such as this reflect Camille Pissarro's river scenes such as his ‘The Marne at Chennevières’ of 1864-65 (NG 2098).
