About this artwork

The mountain of Sainte-Victoire, near where he grew up in Aix-en-Provence, was one of Cézanne’s favourite subjects. He carefully composed his pictures, applying the pigment with short brushstrokes, creating zones of colour and breaking with the traditional laws of perspective. Roger Fry championed Cézanne’s work in Great Britain. He praised the artist’s ‘great genius’ in freeing art from the constraints of naturalism.
