About this artwork

This boy presumably is the eldest son of the man and woman shown in Portrait of a Woman and Portrait of a Man. The facial similarities between him and both his father and younger brother Portrait of a Boy (Aged 11) are clear; they share the same bulbous eyes, heavy brow and rounded chin. The inscription states that it was painted in 1663 when the boy was seventeen years old. All four of the portraits in this family group were originally painted on rectangular panels, and were cut into ovals later.
