About this artwork
In 1855 Bough settled permanently in Edinburgh while continuing to travel widely within Scotland and the North of England. Despite its small scale, this picture is painted with a fluency, vitality and sensitivity to atmospheric effect for which his larger oils were particularly appreciated. These same qualities characterise his landscape watercolours in which his inventiveness and fascination with light found the greatest freedom of expression.
