Andrea Locatelli
Rocky Landscape with a Natural Arch and a Distant Tower
About this artwork
Locatelli was one of the foremost painters of classical landscape in eighteenth-century Rome. His idealising style and his repertoire of motifs derive from the leading landscape painters of the previous century, notably Nicolas Poussin, Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet. The long, narrow format of this painting and its pair indicates that they were made as overdoors.
