About this artwork

Historian of the Dada and Surrealist movements, Georges Hugnet was also a critic, poet and artist. Working from a small bookbinding shop in Paris, Hugnet created unusual and rare book-covers for his Surrealist colleagues and his craftsmanship was admired by key figures such as Duchamp. This intense and powerful portrait was taken in 1934 and was originally made for 'L’Echiquier Surréalist' (Surrealist Chessboard), Man Ray’s montage of current members of the Surrealist group first published in 'Petite anthologie poétique du Surréalisme'.
