Augegutes [Feast for the Eye]
About this artwork
The eye depicted at the top of this woodcut, enclosed by a triangle, is the all-seeing eye of God or the Eye of Providence. Traditionally in Christian imagery, the all-seeing eye is surrounded by rays of divine light, sometimes clouds and sunbursts. Schlangenhausen’s eye of God is flanked by the sun, moon and stars. At the foot of her image we see three human figures dwarfed by Cherubim. The central figure, with arms outstretched, seems to stand in a field of wheat, perhaps symbolising God’s bounty. This is one of ten prints by Schlangenhausen in the collection, which variously show biblical scenes, landscape and harvest.
