About this artwork

Bookplates are small decorative labels which are adhered (usually inside the front cover) to a book to identify its owner. Like this one by King, they often contain the phrase ‘ex libris’ which means ‘from the library of’. Fred J.M. Christie, for whom it was made, is thought to have been a Glasgow textile merchant. King was known for her meticulous outline drawing and fairy tale imagery and her influence can be seen in the work of her close friend, the artist Cecile Walton (1891-1956).
