About this artwork

This drawing is from an album containing fifteen drawings and watercolours which was offered for sale at the ‘International Surrealist Exhibition’, held at the New Burlington Galleries in London in 1936. It was priced at 1200 francs (approximately £15 at the time), and the revenue from the sales was intended to fund Surrealist publications. Wolfgang Paalen instigated the project, and presumably asked his friends to contribute drawings. This location of the first two is unknown. The first two have been lost sight of. The third was bought by the Surrealist collector Edward James and subsequently broken up. Roland Penrose purchased this album in 1936.
