David Williams, (nom de guerre, 'Dave Willis'), 1895 - 1973. Comedian
About this artwork
Dave Willis, one of the great figures of the Scottish stage, was acknowledged by his fellow professionals and public as one of the funniest natural comedians Scotland has ever produced. He starred in pantomime and two films. This painting was painted in around 1940 and shows Willis with a small moustache - his Hitler impersonation entertained the troops during the Second World War. The expressive quality of the paint creates a warm, intimate portrait of the well-known entertainer.
