Joe Rock

James McLurg Monument, Greyfriars' Churchyard, Edinburgh

About this artwork

In 1990 Joe Rock was commissioned to photograph all the monuments in Greyfriars Churchyard in aid of their preservation. Rock is interested in Greyfriars as an architectural historian and his imagery focuses on the structure and design of the graveyard's various monuments. He also draws our attention to the process of decay by which, despite human effort, the graveyard is slowly being reclaimed by nature; as in this picture we are confronted by the weather-worn stone of the James McLurg Monument.
