This is a bronze cast of a sculpture which was originally made from a narrow piece of marble. Gaudier-Brzeska would often work on small, oddly shaped cut-offs of stone from a mason’s yard, which affected the scale and form of his work. He has skilfully worked within the boundaries of his material to make this piece, in which the compressed sense of space between the two figures makes it almost like a two dimensional relief. This is the first of several casts made after the artist’s death. It was presented to the gallery by Mrs Linette Windeler who was given it as a gift by her father for her 21st birthday. When taking shelter during air raids in war-time London, Mrs Windeler would keep the sculpture at the bottom of her sleeping bag to protect it.
