About this artwork

The Isle of Iona’s famous Abbey is silhouetted against still waters. Gentle tones of green, yellow and brown have been applied in broad dappled washes to capture the tranquil effects of light across the landscape. Reflections on the water and the tiny sheep, have been achieved using the pure white of the paper underneath. James Paterson’s wife, Eliza, died in June 1910. Made around the time of her death, this watercolour has a contemplative, spiritual atmosphere.
