Sir John Baptiste de Medina

Sir John Baptiste de Medina, 1659 - 1710. Portrait painter (Self-portrait)

About this artwork

John de Medina set up a studio in London around 1686 and was soon rivalling that other foreign-born portrait painter, Sir Godfrey Kneller. In 1694 he moved to Edinburgh, having been persuaded by his aristocratic Scottish clients in London to paint their wives and families back home. In this self-portrait Medina presents himself as he would one of his distinguished sitters, wearing a large full wig and swathed in an elegant cloak.
