About this artwork

This watercolour with ink and pastel on paper is a study for one of Paolozzi’s early sculptures, which was conceived while he was living in Paris. The sculpture ‘Two Forms on a Rod’ is also in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art’s collection and consists of two enigmatic objects which hang in suspension between two upright supports. With its soft, dissolving lines and contours, this watercolour study emphasises the dreamlike ambiguity of the ‘Hanging Forms’ and their roots in Surrealism.
