Moira Shearer (1926 - 2006) Dancer
About this artwork
Moira Shearer rose to fame in 1948 with her role as the doomed young ballerina in Michael Powell and Emeris Pressburger's film, 'The Red Shoes'. Born in Dunfermline, she made her debut on the stage at the Alhambra Theatre in Glasgow in 1941 and joined Sadler's Wells the following year. During the next decade Shearer danced all the major classical roles. From 1952 she combined family life with a second career as an actress and lecturer, when she married the politician and journalist Ludovic Kennedy. Yousuf Karsh of Ottawa is celebrated as one the most popular and memorable photographers of his century. His intensity of vision and focus is intensified as here, by his use of theatrical lighting, which reinforces Moira Shearer as a dramatic and glamorous figure.
