Profile of a Seated Woman
About this artwork
This work is one of a group of twelve etchings by Walton in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. These etchings are unique examples of Walton’s work in this medium which were executed in the studio of the Scottish Symbolist artist John Duncan (1866-1945) as part of her artistic education. The features of the woman, with her medieval-style dress, elongated neck and flowing hair, are characteristic of the imagery of the Pre Raphaelite Brotherhood; a group of artists and writers who influenced Walton’s work.
