About this artwork

Chalmers and Hutchison were students of Robert Scott Lauder at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh. This informal portrait is typical of many that the tight-knit group of former Lauder pupils painted of each other. Hutchison went on to train in Rome in the 1850s and became a noted sculptor. He carved the figure of John Knox on the west facade of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
