Gertrude Hermes

Fathomless Sounding

About this artwork

The artist’s daughter has related this work to Hermes’ misery, following the break-up of her marriage. Hermes produced a body of prints during the period when Fathomless Sounding was made that were very different to what she had been making previously under the constraints of her illustrating jobs for publishers. These new prints were bolder and more aggressive in style, containing imagery from the natural world used to express psychological states.
