About this artwork
Walton and Sir James Guthrie met at the St Mungo Art Club, Glasgow, in 1878 and formed what was to become a lifelong friendship. Together with Joseph Crawhall, they are often regarded as the focal point of the ‘Glasgow Boys’, a group of artists who painted impressionistic, idealised scenes of Scottish life. This portrait shows Guthrie as a confident and successful artist. In 1902 he became the youngest ever President of the Royal Scottish Academy, and in 1903 was knighted.
