About this artwork
Charles I is shown at the centre of this engraving surrounded by eighteen of his loyal supporters, including the Scottish noblemen and soldiers James Graham, Marquess of Montrose and Lord Bernard Stuart, Earl of Lichfield. Like the King, many of these men were executed or killed during the civil wars. While the King’s portrait is after a painting by Sir Anthony van Dyck, the other portraits are after a number of different artists. The individual portraits are depicted as hanging medallions or miniatures in a trompe l'oeil (trick of the eye) technique.
Joseph Nutting was active during the Restoration period. This engraving was probably made around the time that Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, published his book The History of the Rebellion and the Civil Wars (1702-4).
