About this artwork

Sir Francis Grant (1803 – 1878) was born in Edinburgh into a wealthy Perthshire family. He initially trained for the legal profession but, at the age of 24, his passion for the arts led him to give up law to become a painter. He was largely self-taught, and learnt his painting technique from studying the works of the Old Masters. This charming sketch by the father of his close friend, Edwin Landseer, shows Grant at work in his studio. He appears refined and charismatic.
