Sweeping up for Brexit
About this artwork
Sometimes we are forced to question who we are by events outside our control. Polish born photographer Edyta Majewska started the series Other White when she was feeling anxious about life in the UK after Brexit. Like many people from Eastern Europe living in the UK, she has experienced both xenophobia (prejudice against people from other countries) and the feeling of being invisible. When the Brexit referendum took place in 2016, she was working as a cleaner in a school which was to be used as a polling station. She realised that she was being paid minimum wage to prepare for a vote which had the potential to reduce her family’s already limited prospects.
