Wise women, Clean up - Recovery
About this artwork
This is one of a series of prints by Lynch called Wise Women, which she produced during lockdown. One of the themes of the series is the way that lockdown disproportionately affected women’s labour. Influenced by Christine de Pizan’s The Book of the City of the Ladies, written in the early 15th century, the prints give a feminist reading of women’s work, acknowledging the talent and wisdom that goes into emotional labour of domesticity, what she calls the alchemy of family life. An interrupted printmaking residency in 2020 (the John Florent Stone Award, between ECA and Edinburgh Printmakers) prompted the artist to make prints at home, using materials to hand.
