Georges Hugnet

Untitled collages

About this artwork

Collages were an important area of Surrealist activity. Hugnet began making collages in the 1930s and continued until the 1960s. Little is known about this suite of forty-two collages, but it is believed that they were intended for publication with an accompanying text. The pictures are taken from various sources, such as travel guides, postcards, film and fashion magazines, and nineteenth-century illustrations. However, photographs from pornographic magazines take pride of place, with the overall theme being fulfilment of male voyeuristic sexual fantasies. The collages follow a loose narrative framework, with most of the scenes set in and around historical buildings. This image is the first page, and a colour double page spread; the rest of the portfolio is black and white.
