Although Man Ray is best known as a photographer, he produced paintings throughout his life. This painting shows the back of the door to the artist’s Paris studio, complete with what appears to be graffiti left by visiting artists and friends. A row of initials has been scratched into the paint at the top left of the door - PE stands for Paul Eluard, PP for Pablo Picasso, AF for Man Ray’s Mistress, Ady Fidelin, and DM for Dora Maar. Beneath the initials are sums as well as other drawings including a woman’s face in profile, a hand and a vase of flowers. The stencil-like numbers on the satchel may be a coded date for the painting.
