Pink jumper, hair design, bling from the series You Get Me?
About this artwork
As a young Asian man growing up in Glasgow and then Birmingham, photographer Mahtab Hussain felt that he didn’t quite fit. He wasn’t quite one thing or the other. This experience inspired him to make the series You Get Me? He photographed young, working-class Asian men across the UK and asked them how they felt about identity. They spoke about racism, unemployment, negative media representation and religion. He kept being asked one question back - you get me? Whoever we are, we want to feel understood.
