Marteka Nembhard, Jamaica
About this artwork
Dodds found lots of people with ginger hair in the fishing villages of Treasure Beach on Jamaica. There is a local legend that tells of a shipwreck that cast ashore Scottish sailors whose genes can still be seen today. In reality, the genetic make-up of these villages has been influenced by successive influxes of migrants and colonisers from Europe and Asia, including those involved in the transatlantic slave trade. He also found a high population of people with ginger hair in the Russian city of Perm – another legacy of a complex genetic inheritance passed down from Scottish settlers.
