This drawing in coloured chalk was made by John Duncan in preparation for his painting Saint Bride, on display in room 17. It is part of a group of studies made for the ambitious and richly detailed painting and concentrates on the head of one of the angels that are depicted carrying the sleeping Saint through the sky. John Duncan first trained as an illustrator in his home city, Dundee. His artistic style was inspired by Celtic imagery and the art of the Italian Renaissance.
