View of Abbotsford
About this artwork
Close to Galashiels in the Scottish Borders, the spectacular Abbotsford House was built in the 1820s by the great Scottish writer Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832). A kilted figure adds romance to this already nostalgic scene. Anne Gibson Nasmyth was an accomplished landscape artist and the daughter of Alexander Nasmyth. With her sisters, she managed a painting school in Edinburgh. Their pupils were often other young women, and classes frequently took place in the countryside.
