Wolfgang Dietrich Mayer
A Prince of Berkenfeld, b. 1743
About this artwork
This German prince was a close friend and fellow student at Tübingen University of the Scottish army officer James Steuart Denham. He was treated by James's parents as a member of their family. A label on the back of the painting indicates that the prince was born in 1743, served as Lieutenant-Colonel of the Regiment of Chelly and dies in 1770. However, his exact identity remains to be discovered.
