About this artwork

Webber was the official artist on Captain Cook’s third voyage of 1776-80. Their vessel, the Resolution reached Nootka Sound on the west coast of New Albion (now Vancouver Island) on 29 March 1778, and remained until 26 April. They visited the homes of the native people and observed their way of life. Here, Webber shows us the interior of one of the houses. The open fire in the foreground is in a cedar box and is being used for cooking, and fish hang from the poles on the roof. The sketch in the upper right corner appears to show figures weaving.
