Sun in Stormy Sky over Catterline

About this artwork

Wild stormy weather inspired Eardley, and this is what she was to become known for: expressive renderings of her everyday surroundings. On location outdoors, she worked quickly and on numerous pieces at once. This was partly out of necessity in order to capture the light and weather conditions before they changed, but this also created the impression of a sort of seriality in her work. This view is just a few paces away from the artist’s home in the centre of the village of Catterline. She is looking back toward the South Row of cottages, with her former home No. 1 pictured at the far left. There is a similar sketch of this scene in our collection titled Stormy Sky over Catterline.
