One of Twenty Vignettes - Lochiel's Warning
About this artwork
Donald Cameron of Lochiel (c.1700 – 1748), or ‘Gentle Lochiel’, was an influential Highland clan chief and a prominent figure in the Jacobite Rebellion. At the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Clan Cameron lost about half their strength, and Lochiel himself was badly wounded. In Campbell’s poem, Lochiel is confronted by a 'Wizard' who predicts the horrors to come, but Lochiel dismisses the warning. Turner’s vignette shows warrior and wizard standing on a crag above the battlefield. On the right, a riderless horse bolts home to a bereaved bride, while in the foreground Turner ominously includes an executioner’s block and chains.
