About this artwork
This study can be connected with Turner’s final trip to Switzerland in 1844, when he made a circular tour, visiting Basel, Schaffhausen, Zurich, Goldau, Lucerne, Interlaken and finally Thun and Berne. Thun is set on either side of the River Aare by the lake after which it is named; it provides a splendid vantage point from which to view the Eiger and the Jungfrau. Turner uses light red lines to suggest the rooftops of the medieval town.
