About this artwork

Turner visited Switzerland for several weeks every year between 1841 and 1844. He returned often to the area around Lake Lucerne, which was famous for its varied scenery and the quality of the light and air. This watercolour depicts the great twin peaks of the Mythen mountains, towering above the town of Schwyz. In the foreground cattle are struggling to cross the turquoise water of the River Muota, watched by animated crowds on both banks.
