About this artwork

The Himalayas stretch far into the distance, the Jumna river cascades down the falls and on the left an artist is at work recording the scene. Turner never travelled to India, but it was common practice for professional artists to produce detailed watercolours for publication based on other artists’ sketches. Turner made this view from a drawing by a soldier and amateur artist, Lieutenant George Francis White of the 31st Regiment (1808–1898). Illustrated travel books were very popular and this drawing was published in White’s Views of India, chiefly among the Himalaya Mountains in 1836–8.
