About this artwork
The composition of this drawing is similar to another of Eardley’s works in our collection, an oil painting called Boats on the Shore. The position of the sun, high up in the centre, indicates that it is late morning. A rocky feature of the shoreline known as the Kale Tap is sketched in on the left. The blue boat pictured is the Linfall, which takes its name from the Linn Waterfall, near Catterline church, where the boat’s owner lived. Eardley has sketched a frame around the central portion of the drawing, suggesting that she was thinking of this subject in terms of a painting.
