About this artwork
Eardley thrived on extreme weather conditions, particularly for painting the sea. In her Catterline works, broadly speaking, her paintings and drawings of fields were made in the summer or early autumn months, when the crops were ripening or had just been harvested. Her seascapes were made in the winter, when the wind picked up and the sea was rough. She rarely depicted a calm sea.
