About this artwork

The note ‘Cry of Rome’ on this sketch of an olive seller indicates Allan’s awareness of the tradition of depicting street criers. He also recorded the seller’s call, ‘O, che oliva’, or ‘Oh, what olives!’. Allan used sketchbooks for both on-the-spot drawing in ink and more detailed studies in pencil and chalk. This book is inscribed ‘D. Allan Naples 1770’. It includes drawings of fieldworkers, regional costume, landscapes and classical monuments.
