Quotidian Detritus
About this artwork
This is a self-portrait by the artist Jennifer McRae. She has depicted herself in her studio at St. Margaret's House, Edinburgh. The title of the work Quotidian Detritus refers to the everyday items used up in the artist's studio; Jennifer said about the time spent painting this portrait: 'it felt like a significant time for reflection surrounded by the day to day peculiarities of my trade.' The mug holding her pens, pencils and brushes shows a detail from the painting Queen Street Café by John Bellany, currently on display in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery's Café Portrait on the ground floor. Commenting on her practice, Jennifer has said: 'I just observe and paint’.
