About this artwork

Cameron's austere landscape provides a striking contrast to the romantically charged Highland scenery of earlier painters. He has emphasised the outline and structure of the mountainous range against the bright sky which gives the central peaks an overwhelming presence. All superfluous detail and narrative content have been excluded. Cameron was a prolific etcher, and produced a number of etchings of dark mountainous landscapes set against a bright backdrop.
