About this artwork
Man Up is a short film featuring the three members of the band Young Fathers: Alloysious Massaquoi, Graham ‘G’ Hastings and Kayus Bankole. In the film they are directed by an ominous voice demanding they display a range of emotions in response to orders and questions, including: ‘show us how you feel’ and ‘are you man enough to handle it?’. The voice is Tim Brinkhurst, the former manager and creative director of Young Fathers who co-produced and shot the film in the band’s studio in Leith, Edinburgh. The film challenges preconceptions of masculinity and what it means to be a man today.
