About this artwork

A graduate of St Andrews University, Adamson began his career as minister of Ceres in Fife and rose to be Archbishop of St Andrews at a time when the Church of Scotland had bishops. James VI sent him as ambassador to Queen Elizabeth in 1583. He was frequently in trouble at home because he openly criticised the presbyterian system of church government.
