The Fairy Bride (for 'XXI Welsh Gypsy Folk-Tales')
About this artwork
In 1933 Miller Parker produced a series of illustrations for the book ‘XXI Welsh Gypsy Folk Tales’, including this image. The book contained 21 stories collected from Welsh gypsies by John Sampson, recognised at the time as the great authority on gypsy lore. The book was published in a limited edition of 250 by Gregynog Press in 1933 and it cemented Parker’s reputation as one of the finest wood engravers of the twentieth century. One reviewer of the published book at the time wrote, ‘What gypsy would ever have dreamt of seeing any of his stories presented to the world in such a sumptuous manner?’
