About this artwork

Motesiczky was born in Vienna into a wealthy family. Her father died when she was young and the celebrated artist Max Beckmann, a friend of the family, became a father figure to her, influencing her decision to become a painter. In 1922 she spent several months in the Netherlands, where Van Gogh’s work had a powerful effect on her. This still life, one of her earliest works, was painted in 1924, when she was about eighteen.
