L.S. Lowry

Industrial Scene (from the J. Lyons series 'Lithographs by Contemporary Artists, vol. I')

About this artwork

This is one of series of sixteen colour lithographs commissioned and funded in 1946-47 by the caterers J. Lyons & Co. The posters were to decorate Lyons’ 250 tea rooms during the post-war years while decorating materials were extremely scarce. The series was also a means by which to support contemporary artists, both new and established, and were made available to purchase at an affordable price. Lowry was one the artist’s invited to contribute, alongside John Nash, Duncan Grant, Edward Bawden and others. Industrial Scene was painted for the commission and translated into a print by Chromoworks Ltd, London.
