Francis Bacon

Pope I

About this artwork

Francis Bacon acknowledged that he was obsessed with the portrait of Pope Innocent X by Diego Velazquez (Doria Pamphilj Gallery, Rome), which inspired his most iconic works. This work however refers to a photograph of a different pope, Pius XII being carried in procession in the Vatican. Bacon’s ‘popes’ are typically shown screaming, but here he depicts the figure with his mouth closed, staring at the viewer.
